The short version
What you share is between the two of you. Your location is only shared if you turn it on, ads are never personalised, we never sell your data, and you can delete everything whenever you like.
Who we are
Bring a Jacket is an app for iPhone and Android, made by two small developers in Austria, who are responsible for your data under the GDPR.
Questions, requests or support: support@bringajacket.app.
Your account
To create and run your account we use:
- Your Apple or Google sign-in, and the email address that comes with it.
- Your name and profile photo.
- Your anniversary date.
- Your time zone, so reminders arrive at a sensible hour where you are.
- Your invite code, used to link you with one partner.
- A notification token for each phone you use, and the kinds of notification you have turned off.
We need these to provide the app to you (our contract with you).
What you add
We store what you choose to add, so the two of you can use it:
- Date requests and when you are free.
- Your answers about what you are up for: energy, dress, food, distance, noise, mood, and anything you write yourself.
- The plan: the activity, the venue and its address.
- The planner’s private notes, which are never shown to the partner, not even after the date.
- Up to three clues per date.
- Love notes: text up to 500 characters, or a voice note up to a minute.
- Date photos, up to 20 per date, and stories, up to 5 a day.
- Your status, your quiz answers, how you rate a date afterwards, and your achievements.
We need these to provide the features you use (our contract with you).
Where you are
Only if you turn it on, and there are two separate switches. Both are off until you turn them on, and you can turn either off at any time (your consent).
- Distance: we store your position, but your partner only ever gets a distance, rounded to about a kilometre. Turning it off deletes your stored position and turns the map off too.
- Map: your partner sees your exact position on a map.
Your position is only updated when one of you opens the app. There is no tracking in the background.
When you search for a place to go, your location at that moment is sent to Google to find places nearby. We keep a record of that search, with your position rounded to about a kilometre, so the same empty search is not run twice. It is deleted with the date.
AI
Clue drafts, and the one line under each suggested place, are written by Claude (Claude Haiku), made by Anthropic, and only when you ask.
For clues, Claude is sent the kind of evening you planned, when it is, and your partner’s answers about what they are up for. It is never sent the venue, the address or your private notes.
For places, it is sent the places Google found, never your location.
Under Anthropic’s commercial terms, it does not train its models on any of this. AI can get things wrong, and a clue you send goes out in your name.
Date ideas are ranked by our own code on our own servers, not by anyone else.
Ads
While the app is free, a short video ad may play before a place search. Ads come from Google AdMob and are never personalised: nothing you do or add in Bring a Jacket, and nothing about your relationship, photos, notes or location, is used to choose them. We plan to replace them with paid features later.
To show and count ads, AdMob may receive your device’s identifiers, your IP address, and how you interact with the ad. Because the ads are not personalised, we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, so the app does not ask for tracking permission on iPhone.
In the EU and the UK, Google’s consent form asks for your permission where the law requires it (your consent). If you say no, you may see limited ads that do not store anything on your device for advertising. You can change your choice at any time under Ad choices in Settings.
Usage limits
The app is free with fair-use limits. To apply them, we count how many AI uses and place searches the two of you have used, per date and per month, and keep those counts for about three months. We do this to prevent abuse and keep the free app affordable to run (our legitimate interests).
Who sees it
Your partner sees what you share with them in the app, and no other user does. A love note is hidden from them until it arrives. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for marketing.
The services we use
A few companies do work for us, under contracts that only let them use your data to do that work:
- Supabase stores your account, everything you add and your files, in the EU (Ireland).
- Expo delivers notifications and app updates, through Apple and Google.
- Anthropic writes clue drafts and place lines when you ask.
- Google Maps Platform finds places near you. Google’s own privacy policy also applies to that search: policies.google.com/privacy.
- Mapbox draws the map.
- Google AdMob shows the ads.
- Apple and Google sign you in.
- Cloudflare runs our domain and forwards email sent to support@bringajacket.app.
Some of them are in the United States. Where your data leaves the EU or the UK, it is protected by the safeguards the law requires, such as standard contractual clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
Emailing us
Email sent to support@bringajacket.app is forwarded to our inbox, and kept as long as we need it to answer you (our legitimate interest in replying).
How long we keep it
As long as you have an account. You can remove your own photos whenever you like, and take back a note that has not arrived yet.
If you unlink from your partner, each of you stops seeing what the other shared. Deleting your account, in Settings, deletes your data and your files, including what the two of you shared, for both of you. Backups are cleared within 30 days.
If paid features arrive later, deleting your account will not cancel a subscription with Apple or Google; you cancel those in your phone’s subscription settings.
On your phone
The iPhone home-screen widgets keep a copy of your faces, statuses, distance and next date on the phone itself, so they can show them without opening the app.
Keeping it safe
Everything travels encrypted. Your files are private, and the rules about who can read what are enforced on our servers, not only in the app.
Your rights
Under the GDPR and the UK GDPR you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it or delete it, ask us to limit how we use it, object to how we use it, and ask for it in a form you can take elsewhere. Where we rely on your consent, like location or ads, you can withdraw it at any time, in the app; that does not affect what happened before.
Write to support@bringajacket.app. If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Austrian Data Protection Authority (Datenschutzbehörde, dsb.gv.at), to the authority where you live in the EU, or in the UK to the ICO.
In the United States
Depending on the state you live in, you may have rights to know, see, correct, delete or get a copy of your personal information, and not to be treated differently for using them. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising. Your exact location counts as sensitive information in some states; we only use it for the map you turn on. Ask at support@bringajacket.app.
Everywhere else
If you live somewhere else, we will handle your request under the law that applies to you and to us. Write to support@bringajacket.app.
Age
Bring a Jacket is for people aged 16 and over. If you think someone younger has an account, tell us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
